For instance, manual transmissions are the standard in this European country. If you want to get a car rental in Ireland that has automatic transmission, it will usually cost extra. Still, this may be a good idea for you because driving in Ireland can be confusing for Americans as it is. Like other parts of Europe, driving occurs on the left side of the road instead of the right. When you are planning a trip in Ireland, you will already have to concentrate more than normal in order to make sure that you follow the driving laws in that country. Adding the extra effort of driving a stick shift may cause problems and be too much work for you. Not only that, but you will need that extra bit of attention to read road signs and maps as well. There are also various taxes and insurance payments that you will need to take care of when you rent the car. For instance, if you plan on renting a car at the airport, many companies charge an airport surcharge. This means that you will end up paying more if you get your car rental in Ireland at the airport. It may be a better choice for you to get a taxi to a different rental location. There are also extra fees if you plan to travel to Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is actually a separate country a part of Great Britain. Because of this, most rental car companies will charge you a fee between $25 and $30 in order to enter that country. They also forbid renters from entering any other countries. Since there are no other countries on the same island as Ireland and Northern Ireland, this shouldn’t be too hard to avoid. Also keep in mind the price of gas (known is petrol there) in Ireland. It tends to be more expensive there instead of what you would find in America. It will usually cost more than $5.00 per gallon in American equivalency. While this may seem steep, keep in mind that cars in Ireland have a much higher mileage rate. It would also help your costs if you chose the smallest vehicle possible for this reason. Unless you plan on spending all of your time in the big city, such as Dublin, you will likely need to rent a car in order to get around. If you compare prices from several different rental car companies, keeping fine print in mind, you should be able to find the right rental car for the right price. Doing the extra bit of research is always a good idea. |
