Be Prepared to tour by AutomobileOne of the best ways to really get to know a new country is to not only visit the big cities, but the small towns as well. Small towns are great because you see what it is really like to live there. This is the case in nearly all countries, and Ireland is no exception. If you are planning to visit this amazing island country, you may want to see the country while you are there. While the big cities, including Dublin, have a lot for you to do, the countryside has a very interesting culture. Not only that, but the views in these areas are absolutely stunning. No trip to Ireland is complete without visiting these areas. While it is acceptable to use the assistance of a taxi or bus when you're spending time in the city, this isn't a good way to travel throughout the countryside. Even if you can find someone who will take you around to where you want to go, it is often very expensive. There is another way, though. You can rent a car in order to get where you want. This is a great idea that usually costs a lot less than regular public transportation. You will be able to go where you want to in Ireland without having to worry about your transportation. Driving in Ireland is fairly easy once you get the hang of it. The first thing you need to be aware of when it comes to driving in this island country is that they drive on the left hand side of the road. This is the opposite of what you would find in the United States. Because of this, you are going to need to get used to this new way of driving. Not only will the car be on the opposite side of the road, but you will be sitting in a different spot in the car than what you are used to as well. Where in America, the driver sits on the left, the driver sits on the right in Ireland. This can cause a lot of confusion for people who are new to this way of driving. Because of this, you should find a small, less crowded neighborhood nearby the rental car company in which you can practice. Don't move on to a harder area until you get used to driving on the left side of the road. Don't forget to practice turning as well, since many drivers forget what they are doing when they turn. Just like in most countries, there is a minimum driving age. While this is 16 in the United States, it is 17 in Ireland. This may affect who can drive the car when you rent one there. While each rental car company varies in its own rules, most companies require that the renter be between the ages of 21 and 75 in order to rent the car. This is a precaution because people within this age group tend to be the most reliable drivers. If you plan on partaking of some of the great alcohol that is served in Irish pubs, be aware that the police there have strict rules on drunk driving. You will be charged if you pass the blood alcohol limit of .08%. Because of this, be sure to drink responsibly before driving in Ireland. Not only will you have a safer trip, but you will avoid getting in trouble as well. Finally, always obey the signs on the side of the road. Follow the speed limit and keep an eye on your map. This will help improve your vacation to Ireland. |
